The Empordà is a compendium of nature, heavenly beaches, good Mediterranean gastronomy and also good wines. As regards the latter, today at Restaurant Can Miquel we will unveil for you the reason why the Empordà is a land with a wine tradition.
A long history
Wine culture and the marketing of the product of the vine appear in Catalonia approximately in the sixth century B.C, thanks to the most important Greek colony in the country, Empúries. This is the town which centuries later would lend its name to the whole area of the Empordà.
Four centuries later, there is documental proof that the wines of the territories of Emporiae and from other places in the Tarraconense are present in internal markets, as well as in other provinces of the Roman Empire, and in the metropolis itself.
Also, in the Middle Ages, this wine tradition is continued. For example, on the lower slopes of the mountain at Rodes, vines were planted vines in terraces, and these were tended by the monastery at San Pere de Rodes. It is worth mentioning the cellar monk Ramón Pere de Novas, to whom is attributed a treaty on this topic. San Quirze de Colera or Santa Maria de Vilabertan also figure as having vines in the Empordà.
Reds, whites, rosés and Grenache
As they explain at the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin, the range of wines in the Empordà is very wide. What can be found?
Red wines: high quality, with body, well-structured and harmonious, which on occasions have a touch of careful nurturing. It is precisely these reserve and aged wines which present very characteristic aromatic notes. For example, they are complex, fragrant, with a touch of spices, always keeping fruit and plant aromas.
White wines: traditionally elaborated with indigenous varieties and which stand apart for their freshness and tastiness.
Rosés: characterized by their defined cherry colour , the rosés of the Empordà D.O ( Denomination of origin) stand out for their great character and delicate aromas, and are fresh and ideal for any meal beside the Mediterranean .
The Grenache of the Empordà: a sweet and natural wine made with the variety of grape which lends it its name. Full-bodied, with the very taste of the grape, mature, warm and silky, virtues which give it traces of an exceptional dessert wine, together with the other sweet wine typical of the area, the Moscatel of the Empordà.
Ecological wines, mistelles, wines from overmature grapes and sparkling wines complete the wine offer in the Empordà.
