Catalonia is full of natural spaces to enjoy a pleasant family day, walks to clear your mind, make hiking trails and have the opportunity to get in touch with nature. Among all those natural spaces is the Natural Park of Montgrí, located between the regions of Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà.
If you are a lover of nature and you love to spend the day outdoors, you will surely want to visit this park, so we know a little more about its characteristics and how to make the most of a day in the Montgrí Natural Park.
A natural reserve
This park occupies 8,192.19 hectares that correspond to terrestrial and marine zones. It includes two partial nature reserves; a marine to which the Medes Islands belong, and a terrestrial one that includes the Low Ter.
Here you can find a unique landscape full of many cliffs, beaches and coves full of ecological wealth. In its marine habitat there is a complex ecosystem that houses species of fish such as sea bass, imperial saint, the dentol, corball or grouper. Although one of the most expected to see is always the bottlenose dolphin that usually appears around the islands attracted by the amount of food that can be found in the area.
The terrestrial fauna stands out for its diversity of seabirds and birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, the duke, the gralla and the common kestrel. The most striking bird in the area and also the most abundant is the yellow-legged gull, so much is its presence in this reserve that here takes place one of the largest colonies of its kind in Catalonia.
What to do in the Montgrí Natural Park
There are many outdoor activities that can be performed in this park. The hiking routes are usually the favorite, especially to make them as a family activity, in fact every Sunday between the month of March and November, guided tours are organized to different natural areas of the park area that belongs to the Empordà.
The itineraries also have different underwater activities. Excursions in special boats in which it is possible to observe the seabed of the Medes Islands while the monitors explain to visitors the different species that inhabit this rich ecosystem, this is undoubtedly the favorite activity of many children.
For the more adventurous this is an ideal place to observe nature, appreciate and photograph the different species of birds that live here and of course practice many water sports.
Whatever activity you prefer, we are sure that this natural reserve will leave you breathless. And if at the end of a day full of emotions in the open air you want to close with a golden touch with an authentic Mediterranean meal, our restaurant Can Miquel is very close to the Natural Park of Montgrí.
