Now that we are closed for holidays at Can Miquel Restaurant, it is a good time to find out more about the Mediterranean. Will you join us?
1-It bathes 20 countries and 3 continents:
One of the great curiosities about it is that it is surrounded by 20 countries belonging to Europe, Africa and Asia. Among them are Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Lebanon.
2-1% of the ocean surface:
With a surface area of 2.51 million square kilometres, the Mediterranean represents only 1% of the total surface area of the oceans worldwide. Nevertheless, it has more than 17% of the marine diversity in the entire planet with more than 17,000 species.
3-More than 5,000 metres of maximum depth:
One of the curiosities about the sea, perhaps unknown to you, is that its average depth is 1,430 metres. Nevertheless, it reaches a maximum level of 5,267 metres in the Mataplan marine trench, near Greece. A figure far from the greatest depth documented for an ocean, situated at the island of Guam (Phillipines) in the Mariana trench. To be exact, 11,033 metres deep.
4-Its name comes from ¨Mare Nostrum¨:
Although in Ancient Rome the Mediterranean was called ¨Mare Nostrum¨, which means ¨our sea¨ in Latin, this is not its original name. The etymology of the Mediterranean comes from the Latin ¨Mar MediTerraneum¨ meaning ¨sea between lands¨.
5-The Strait of Gibraltar is its only source of renovation:
Due to its orography, the Mediterranean only connects to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar. This is then the only source of renewal and replacement for the entire sea. Thus you could say that the Mediterranean basin is¨ almost closed´´.
Well, now that have learned more curiosities about the Mediterranean, you only have to go to l ´Escala to enjoy, in all its glory, a first –class nature spot like Cala Montgó. If you do so from March onwards, you will be able to round off your visit with a meal of marine and Mediterranean cuisine at the Can Miquel Restaurant. We are waiting for you there!
